CUTTING PITCH

The installation by Jurgen Ots inaugurates the series of residencies in Komplot's new premises in Brussels. The space is rough and so seems at first sight the sculptural proposal made by Ots.

A heavily wrinkled curtain of alternating red and black tape crosses
diagonally the space. Both expressive and fragile, dramatic and controlled, the installation gives a striking example of Ots's rigourous creations, which go beyond the apparent disorder of their forms and materials. The materials are poor, indeed, but are conferred with an abstract and expressive power open to many interpretations and projections.

The origin of the installation - between perdition and liberation ­ is
apparent in it's very title Cutting Pitch, as well as in it's contrasted and undulating forms. They act as a sort of threatening frontier but, at the same time, a seductive, tempting gate to a mysterious and invisible dimension.

Between apparently organic, rough, dionysiac forms and controlled
craftsmanship and composition, the works of Jurgen Ots play flirtatiously
with the aesthetics of the grotesque. Between violence and delicacy, the ambiguous play with the materials adds to the power of the installations.
Pressured, abused, de-naturated, they seem to acquire a new autonomy, as if their expressivity and true nature had been revealed by the treatments
they have undergone.

Jurgen Ots (1980, Dendermonde; lives and works in Frankfurt am Main and Brussels) is interested in the expressive potential of materials. This might explain why he elaborates the late Renaissance esthetics of the grotesque (eg. the italian style Boboli Garden or Bomarzo’s Parc of the Monsters) celebrated in the Epoque of Mannerism.

Using these points of reference, Jurgen Ots moves towards a more psychological projection of the material itself. He analyzes ideas that progressively take distance from the material that, after having imprisoned them initially, takes a step back in order to take a more formal direction. Jurgen Ots reveals a Neo Expressionist research in the field of plastic abstract art intended as three-dimensional or “extended” painting.

The work of Jurgen Ots is about visual representation and its relationship to the quotidian. His primarly source being the external forms surrounding him in daily life which he translates into abstract, tortured images which function as metaphors for marginal emotions, dynamics, relations and situations. The work of Jurgen Ots is dark, but human and vivid ; His installations have a voice of their own with The anonymous passage series containing a multiplicity of meaning and interpretations singular for every spectator. The installation has the presence of a religious icon, simple but grotesque in its action. A minimum of input and a maximum of interpretation.

Jurgen Ots works with materials in a non-conformist and anti-traditional way. His actions underline the specific character of the material, putting them through a process of re-contextulization. This works are alienated in the space and this brings an element of intrigue ; People want to touch the work... it’s sensitive to physical contact... it provokes physical attraction. The artists process is one of experimentation and by playing out different possibilities the work almost invents itself.

L’espace est brut, un ancien garage, que Komplot inaugure comme un nouveau lieu. L’installation de Jurgen Ots, jeune artiste belge encore peu montré à Bruxelles ne l'est pas moins.

Un rideau suspendu rouge et noir traverse, découpe et grève l’espace tel une chape de poix. La dimension architecturale, contrôlée et intégrée caractéristique des installations de Jurgen Ots frappe par la maîtrise et la rigueur de l’ensemble. Les matériaux sont pauvres, dénaturés de façon à acquérir une charge expressive abstraite, ouverte à toutes les lectures et les projections.

L’origine de l’installation - entre perdition et libération – se révèle autant par son titre Cutting Pitch que par ses formes ondulées et tranchantes ou que par ses valeurs chromatiques contrastées et conventionnellement, culturellement opposées. La pièce s’avance comme un mur, un rideau ou une frontière à la fois menaçante et enveloppante, repoussante et tentante.

L’art de Jurgen Ots produit un basculement : Une oscillation entre la dimension première, brute et dionysiaque de l’oeuvre, le jaillissement organique et pulsionnel de ses matériaux, et l’équilibre rigoureux et maîtrisé de la composition d’ensemble. Ce jeu se love également dans le geste de destruction ou plutôt de trituration et dénaturation qui conduisent à une fragmentation et ensuite une recomposition de parties malmenées. Flirtant avec l’esthétique maniériste du grotesque, Ies pièces de Jurgen Ots libèrent l’expressivité du matériau, en l’exploitant la pressurant, la détournant ou la contournant.

De installatie van Jurgen Ots geeft het startschot aan de reeks van residenties die Komplot organiseert in haar nieuwe ruimte in Brussel. De ruimte is ruw, en op het eerste zicht de installatie van Jurgen Ots ook.

Een zwaar gekreukt gordijn, van afwisselend zwarte en rode tape, staat diagonaal opgesteld in de ruimte. Zowel expressief als kwetsbaar, dramatisch en gecontroleerd, geeft de installatie een sterk voorbeeld van de strenge creaties van Jurgen Ots, die verder gaan dan de klaarblijkelijke chaos die je terugvindt in hun vorm en materiaal.

De materialen zijn goedkoop, maar bezitten een abstracte en expressieve kracht die open staat voor vele interpretaties en projecties. De oorsprong van de installatie – tussen verdoemenis en vrijheid – wordt duidelijk in de titel Cutting Pitch, zowel als in haar immer contrasterende en golvende vormen. Ze gelden als een soort van grens die tegelijk bedreigend en verleidelijk is, een aantrekkelijke poort naar een mysterieuze en onzichtbare dimensie.

Tussen schijnbaar organische, ruwe en dyonesische vormen en gecontroleerd vakmanschap en compositie, flirten de werken van Jurgen Ots met de esthetiek van het groteske.

Tussen geweld en delicaatheid voegt het ambigue spel met de materialen kracht toe aan de installaties. Gedrukt, misbruikt, en uit hun natuurlijke context gerukt, lijken ze en nieuwe autonomie te verwerven, alsof hun uitdrukking en ware natuur worden ontmanteld door de manier waarop ze bewerkt werden.
